Chapter 2 "Where do I begin?"

Begin with watching a minute or so of this video of sculptors:

Referring to the story of the marble and the lion:    (p.16)

Spiritual formation is the careful attentiveness to the work of God, our Master sculptor, as we

submit to the gradual chipping away of all that is not of God, until the inner lion is revealed.”

What does this mean to you?

Absurd living is a way of life in which we remain deaf to the voice that speaks to us in our

silence…we may feel unfulfilled and wonder if being busy but bored, involved yet lonely, is a symptom of an absurd life: the life in which we no longer hear the voice of the One who created us and who calls us to a new life.”

Think of a time you had a hard time “hearing the voice of God”. What might keep

              you from hearing this voice?

Do you feel a need to fill in moments of silence with something useful or effective?  Do you have trouble with silence? Why? Is it fear?

Why would someone be afraid to hear the voice of God?

The problem…is not how to make the spiritual life happen, but to see where it actually is

happening…Our task is to recognize that, indeed, it is God who is acting, and we are involved already in the spiritual life.” (p.20)

“If you imagine yourself as a beautiful but unformed block of marble, what

would God need to chip away to reveal the lion inside of you? (p. 24)

Take few moments and silently meditate on Isaiah 51:1-2:

“Listen to me, you who pursue righteousness and who seek the Lord.

Look to the rock from which you were cut

And to the quarry from which you were hewn;”

Spiritual Direction. Chapter 1
What is Spiritual Direction?
Nouwen says it is "creating a space for God in your life."
“The goal of spiritual direction is spiritual formation…This can’t happen without discipline,
       practice, and accountability.” p. xv

So, as we read a chapter each week, this is part of that "discipline, practice and accountability" that will form your spiritual life. Each week I will send some reflection questions. Go to the bottom of the page and hit "Add a Comment". Then, refer to a question and start or add to a conversation. (This is new to me to create so I may have set it up with some glitches. Let's keep trying.)

CHAPTER 1
The first universal question of the book is "Who will answer my questions?"

1. Read Job 2:11-13 Job's situation; Job 5:8-18 a friend's response; Job 6:14-15 Job's response back
Reflect on a time in your life when a painful or persistent question was dismissed or
answered glibly by others. What impact did that response have on you?

2. Who do you go to when you have real life questions that puzzle you?

3. What is the meaning of the story about the Zen master on pp. 3-4?

4. What does the chapter say about "who will answer my questions?
How do we create space for God within us?

Take a moment and meditate on U2's "I still haven't found what I'm looking for" video

Can you take a moment of silence to drink this all in?
